Though adults are not affected as frequently as children, it is important for adults to be aware of how adult ear infection can affect them. Adult ear infection is caused by infection in the Eustachian tube, near the inner ear. The Eustachian tube connects the inner ear to the nasal passages in order to drain fluid from the ears and equalize pressure between outside and inside of the body, but when fluid or mucous builds up in the Eustachian tube, it is an easy target for infection.

Middle ear infections are one of the most common childhood problems. Let’s start by talking about infections. An infection happens when germs like bacteria and viruses get inside the body and cause trouble. Germs can get into your ears. The ear is divided into three parts: outer, middle, and inner. When the germs bother your outer ear, it’s called swimmer’s ear.
The middle ear is a small pocket of air behind the eardrum. You have a middle ear infection when germs get into the middle ear and the...

Q Is it safe to give my six-month-old baby over-the-counter cold medicine? He has had two colds so far, thanks to his older sister who brings them home from preschool.
AIt is not a good idea to give over-the-counter (OTC) cough and cold medicines to children, particularly those under the age of six years. One of the problems with these medications is that they come by many different names, dosages and strengths. Many of them contain the same or similar medications and it is very easy to give a...

Cerumenor earwax is a self-cleaning agent produced in your ears with protective, lubricating, and antibacterial properties.
Earwax is not really a "wax" but a water-soluble mixture of secretions, plus hair and dead skin. Earwax is formed in the outer one-third of the ear canal, but not in the deep part of the ear canal near the eardrum.
The absence of earwax may result in dry, itchy ears. Most of the time the ear canals are self-cleaning; that is, there is a slow and orderly migration of earwax...

GP prescribing of antibiotics to children has jumped in the last five years, despite a series of directives to limit their use, UK researchers say.

Between 2003 and 2006 there was a 10% increase in antibiotic prescribing in the UK, reversing previous downward trends, a study of GP patient data shows.
There was also a sharp increase in labelling of infections as non-specific, suggesting GPs were avoiding a definite diagnosis to circumvent guidelines on antibiotic use, the researchers...

More than 3 out of 4 kids have had at least one ear infection by the time they reach 3 years of age. To understand how ear infections develop, let's review how the ear works.

Prevailing medical treatment - until now, treatment has involved the use of steroids and pseudo-epinephrine to reduce edema, with antibiotic cover for primary bacterial infection or secondary complication. If medical treatment fails and inflammation recurs despite extended antibiotic treatment, the usual practice is to perforate the tympanic membrane and ensure that it remains open by inserting tiny drainage tubes.
